Talk To The Storm

Have you ever stopped to realize how powerful the words coming out of your mouth really are?  In any given moment we start pouring out words of affirmation and at other times we vomit a myriad of toxic negativity.  Maybe we tend to catch ourselves when addressing others but fail to guard our tongue when speaking over ourselves or present situations.  It may not apply to you, but I have found myself speaking negative thoughts about my own abilities and at other times, confessing how utterly hopeless a situation is.   The......

Blind Spots

The French philosopher, Albert Camus once said, “Life is the sum of all your choices.”  As with everything, in some of those moments we choose well and others not so much.  But we’re presently exemplifying the sum total…the average of both.  Most of us want the scales to weight more in our favor than to our detriment, but somehow we seem to keep adding to our list of wrong decisions.  It almost feels at times that we can’t help but choose…well, blindly. You see Jesus consistently called out the religious leaders of......

Busy but Barren

Again, I’m going to sound like the quintessential old man when I say, “When I was growing up…” Nevertheless, when I was growing up in the 70s, there was a wave of euphoria that swept through the media that made its way into my social studies, history, and economics classes.  The euphoria was a result of futurists claiming that because of advancing technologies when I entered the workforce the average workweek would be four days or less.  Every weekend would be a 3-day-er.  The futurists went on to say that the trend......

Uncomfortable Clarity

Have you ever got mud in your eyes?  Dirt?  An eyelash for that matter?  I remember about 15 years ago when I was on a ladder replacing letters for the latest announcement to be displayed ON our church marquee.  All of a sudden, what the eye doctor would later identify as a piece of spider web somehow got in my eye with the most allergic reactions I have ever had.   To say that it was an irritant is an understated fact.  It felt like the plague had attached itself to my......

Killing Your Giant Through Adoption

Giants are killed through adoption. That’s an odd statement but it’s true.  Like David, we all face a giant (1 Sam 17).  However, our giant makes all of Goliath’s nearly 10 feet of height look diminutive.  The size of each of our giant can vary, but regardless, it still rules over us. I am talking about our pride – hubristic pride to be specific. There are two kinds of pride.  Authentic and hubristic.  Authentic pride is good pride.  Authentic pride is what is on display at the baptism of Jesus (Matt 3)......

Diamond in the Rough

What do you see when you look in the mirror?  Every day I wake up and like most people do, I head to the bathroom to pry the eyes open and brush the stank breath away.  But one thing that is always unavoidable is the reflection that I am met with in the mirror.  Sure, much of the time I simply focus on the hair out of place or the beard that needs trimming, but there are times when I am left with the thoughts of who I am…what I do…questions of......

Proving You to You

Sometimes God wants to push you, to prove you, to you. I remember parts of boot camp vividly.  I entered into the US Army in 1987 as an artilleryman.  I was part of a crew that fired big canons, which fired 90lbs. bullets up to 11 miles away.  Ours happened to be self-propelled, which made them look like a tank to most people. One of the distinct recollections that haunts me is...

With God

Last week when I was studying online for a new series at Highway called, Who Told You?, I came across the man shown above named, Erik Weihenmayer.  Now Erik’s story captivated me on a extremely deep level…first because it’s a true story, but secondly because he overcame adversity in a major way.  You see, on May 25, 2001 Erik became the first blind man to summit Mt. Everest!  Yeah, if you saw the movie Mt. Everest that was recently in the theaters, you know that is an amazing feat!  I loved this quote......

Defining Identity

Who are you? That is a question that often haunts us. It causes us to buy things; wear certain clothes; even surround ourselves with specific people. All in the hopes that these peripheral things will help define us. Give us some level of value. Give us identity. I remember turning 16 and rushing to the DMV office with my mom to get a much desired pimple faced mug shot. It felt good to carry around an official ID card. It could identify me in a possible emergency situation, opening a bank account......
